Psyllium: fibre, satiety, bowel function and precautions for use
Blond psyllium is a soluble fibre that absorbs water and forms a gel. This property explains its benefits for bowel function and its potential effects on cholesterol and the glycaemic response. It also explains the most important precaution: Take with sufficient liquid.
What the data shows
A recent meta-analysis of randomised trials reports an average reduction in LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol, with significant heterogeneity between studies. Other analyses suggest an effect on blood glucose levels in certain populations. This is not a stand-alone treatment for any medical condition.
How to get started
- Start with the small amount indicated on the product.
- Mix immediately in a large glass of water.
- Drink it straight away; do not wait until the gel becomes very thick.
- Increase your intake gradually to minimise bloating and wind.
The Organic Psyllium NaturGreen 100 g is available in the shop.
Spacing out medication
Psyllium may affect the absorption of certain medicines. MedlinePlus specifically mentions precautions regarding digoxin, salicylates and nitrofurantoin; other treatments may also be affected. Ask your pharmacist what time interval to observe. The NHS recommends taking your isphagoul product at least 30 minutes apart from other medicines, but the exact interval depends on the treatment.
When not to improvise
Difficulty swallowing, known or suspected obstruction, unexplained abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or an inability to drink enough fluids require medical advice. Never take the powder dry.
