Whey or mass gainer? Compare what you want to add to your meals: mainly protein, or a larger amount of energy together with protein and carbohydrates. The biggest bag is not automatically the best choice, and calories per serving alone do not allow you to compare two formulas.
Start with food, then consider the powder
Protein also comes from foods such as eggs, dairy products, fish, meat, pulses and other sources. A powder can supplement your intake when useful; it is not required for resistance training. The NIH explains that food can meet the needs of many athletes and that protein supplements are an option when needed. NIH fact sheet on supplements and performance.

A simple framework for choosing
| Your priority | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Mainly adding protein | Grams of protein per 100 g and the cost for an equal amount of protein from a whey or isolate. |
| Adding a more energy-dense preparation | The gainer’s calories, carbohydrates, protein and fat, then the actual amount of powder planned. |
| Comparing two bags with different prices | Price per kilogram, serving weight and the number of servings that can actually be calculated. |
| Choosing a flavour | Its own nutrition table, ingredients and allergens, without automatically using those of another flavour. |
This framework helps with buying; it does not determine your needs. No product guarantees weight gain, muscle gain or the absence of fat gain.
Critical Mass Original and Professional Lean: two different formulas
Critical Mass Original / High Calorie Gainer and Critical Mass Professional / Lean Mass Gainer are not interchangeable names. The manufacturer describes different compositions and serving sizes: 240 g for Original and 150 g for Professional on the pages consulted. Original combines several dairy and carbohydrate ingredients; Professional includes oats, maltodextrin, dairy proteins and added creatine, among other ingredients.
“Lean” is part of the range’s name: it does not guarantee gaining mass without gaining fat. Check the formula written on the bag, then the flavour. Older and newer presentations can change; the label on the product sold must match its product page.
Compare figures for the same amount
A larger serving may display more calories and protein even if the powder is not more concentrated. Start with values per 100 g, then calculate what your amount of powder supplies.
Amount per serving = value per 100 g × weight of powder used ÷ 100.
A calculation example that does not represent a product for sale: a powder labelled 380 kcal per 100 g supplies 190 kcal in 50 g. If you mix it with milk, the milk’s nutrients and energy are added. A scoop measures volume; scales are more accurate for checking the weight prepared.
The same approach applies to price: price per kilogram = bag price ÷ net weight in kilograms. A fictional 6 kg bag priced at 900 DH costs 150 DH/kg. This calculation alone says nothing about its protein percentage or your tolerance.
What to check on the bag
- The complete formula: Original or Professional Lean, the flavour and weight.
- Total carbohydrates as well as sugars; a lower sugar content does not automatically mean fewer carbohydrates or calories.
- Allergens and added ingredients, particularly if you already use another supplement.
- The batch, date, serving size and preparation instructions on the packaging you receive.
If you have an allergy, a health condition or a prescribed diet, have a professional adapt the choice to your situation. Food should remain varied and suited to the person, in line with the principles of adequacy and diversity described by the World Health Organization.
