Beta-alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that is produced endogenously in the liver. In addition, humans can obtain beta-alanine by consuming certain foods, such as poultry and meat.
Beta-alanine has been identified as the precursor that limits the synthesis of carnosine, which acts as an intracellular pH buffer.
It has been shown that beta-alanine supplementation consistently increases carnosine levels, which increases intracellular buffering capacity and has potential beneficial effects on sustained performance during high-intensity exercise and/or on improving the quality of training for athletes practising strength and power sports.
